Florence has its “Museo del Novecento”!

It’s been a long wait, but finally Florence has its Museo del Novecento, dedicated to the twentieth century!

It’s been a long wait because it’s been over 50 years, 50 years of projects and proposals, before the public could finally see a part of the collections of the City of Florence, granted by artists, collectors and institutions.

After the huge flood that covered Florence in 1966, leaving behind the loss of thousands of works of art, the art historian Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti took the initiative to assemble a committee to raise worldwide public awareness and to ask local and international artists to donate some of their works to replace the ones that had been destroyed. Over 200 artists replied to the appeal of “Artisti per Firenze”, as the initiative was named, and the City of Florence promised that their works would become part of a future international museum of contemporary art.

The new Florentine museum is devoted to the Italian art of the twentieth century and houses a collection of about 300 works, divided into 15 exhibition spaces and organized through a path that traces the twentieth century, with its chronological, thematic and interdisciplinary approach, through paintings, sculptures, videos, installations and documents, and with the support of multimedia stations, sound devices and video rooms.

San Niccolo' Tower

Every summer, the great tower on the Arno is re-opened for visits and it is an emotion to climb it up. The Tower at San Niccolò is located in Piazza Poggi square and it was built in 1324 in order to protect the district of Oltrarno.
It is the only tower in Florence that was never “decapitated” that is shortened with respect to its original height: it still preserves its very evocative walkway that has been secured so that it can be offered to citizens and tourists.

Once the top of the tower has been reached after around 160 steps, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree view of Florence with new glimpses, for example they can see the tourists just in front of them who are in Piazzale Michelangelo square.

The San Niccolò Tower is open to the public everyday from the 24th of June to the 30th of September  – with accompanied access from 5pm to 8pm, with guided itineraries in Italian, English, French, Spanish (max. 20 people) every 30 minutes.

Advance booking is recommended. If it rains, this service is cancelled.
Visit to the Tower: € 4.
